Renowned Egyptologist Speaks in Reno

Posted: Updated:

Students at Bishop Manogue Catholic High School got a rare treat Wednesday - a visit from one of the world's most famous archaeologists.

Dr. Zahi Hawass is kind of like a real-life Indiana Jones - he has spent his life discovering and exploring ancient Egyptian tombs.

And today- he walked students through some of his biggest discoveries.

Dr. Hawass showed the audience video inside the tomb of King Tut's parents.

That is one of the three major accomplishments that he discussed with students. He has gotten to CT scan the mummy of King Tut, he's found mummies of some of Egypt's most famous kings and queens - and now he's lecturing for the next few months at Sierra Nevada College.

He says other than sharing his discoveries, he hopes he can rally support for the need to build replicas of the tombs in Egypt's Valley of Kings.

After 3,000 years and countless tourists going through the tombs, he says we can't expect them to last forever. "I believe that the tombs in the Valley of Kings, in less than 100 years, all of these tombs will be destroyed. We have to make a replica valley."

Dr. Hawass will lecture at Sierra Nevada College through August.
