Truckee Police have identified the woman killed by a Union Pacific train on Wednesday afternoon.

Police say 27-year-old Janaki Rose Hayes of Truckee was struck by the train just before 1:45pm under and east of the Highway 267 overpass. They say she was wearing headphones that fully covered her ears while listening to loud music. Train operators say they saw her, sounded a horn and slowed the train in an effort to avoid hitting her.

Police say she was walking or running westbound on the rails with the intent of crossing the Truckee River at some point to access the Legacy Trail for a jog.

When first responders arrived on scene, they found her body.

Police say the train's operators were very cooperative during the investigation and say it appears they did not contribute to the accident and did what they could to try to avoid it.

Police say alcohol and/or drugs do not appear to be a factor in this case.

There were no passengers aboard the cargo train during the accident other than the operators. It came from Sparks and was headed to Roseville.

If you have any information on this accident, call Truckee Police at 530-550-2329.
