NDOT Asks Drivers to be Careful in Road Work Zones

Posted: Updated:

Spring is here and along with flowers popping up around our area you're going to see a lot of road cones as construction season starts up once again.

NDOT is warning all drivers that they're going to be seeing a lot of construction zones as summer gets closer.

And that means people are going to have to adjust their driving to keep it safe out here.

"There's a lot of road construction that's already happening and will be happening throughout the summer in northern Nevada. So it's really important that we all just pay attention and drive safely and slow down in road work areas," says Meg Ragonese, NDOT Public Information Officer.

This is National Work Zone Awareness Week and NDOT is taking part in hopes that they can avoid major accidents this year. They say there were nearly 600 crashes in work zones in Nevada last year. And some can be deadly like one in eastern Nevada last November. Two road construction workers were killed - and two others were injured in the crash.

And this year there will be projects on some of our biggest roadways-- including Mt. Rose Highway, Kingsbury Grade and Highway 50.

So NDOT says look out for changing traffic patterns, slow down and pay attention. "We just want to avoid any type of injury or fatality on our roads, and in our road work zones."

And remember a speeding ticket from a construction zone will be double the fine so pay close attention to the posted speed limits because law enforcement will be looking.
