Pits Bulls That Killed 3 Dogs to be Euthanized

Posted: Updated:

Washoe County Regional Animal Services says two pit bulls that killed 3 dogs inside a Spanish Springs home on Friday will be euthanized Monday.

According to Washoe County Animal Services, the two pit bulls broke through a fence of a nearby backyard, walked across the family's yard, and entered right into the home, located on Reiger Springs Drive.

"The dogs entered through a dog door, an unsecured dog door," said Barry Brode, Director of Washoe County Animal Services.

Jill, a black lab, Gucci, a shih tzu, and Buddy a Pekingese all died.

Neighbors say the pit bulls have broken out before, with one homeowner even saying the dogs entered his home, but he was able to get them out without a problem.

Some encounters with the two dogs were positive. "The pit bulls last summer were breaking into our yard and they were very friendly, and came into my house, hangout with my dogs," said neighbor Rorie Monroe.

The owner of the pit bulls has since been cited for the incident - and it isn't the first time. However, county officials did not go into specifics of the dogs' past when we talked to him on Friday.

Brode says what happened last week did not have to happen at all, and it's a lose-lose situation for everybody involved. "An accident that could have been prevented," said Brode. "By taking responsibility by making sure the animals were secured in the kennel, that the fence line was properly secured, and up to date."
