Olympic Medalist Backs Squaw Valley Expansion Plans

Posted: Updated:

The Squaw Valley ski resort's expansion plans have won an endorsement from Olympic skiing champion Julia Mancuso but criticism from environmentalists.

Mancuso, who grew up on the slopes of the Sierra Nevada resort that hosted the 1960 Winter Olympics, backed the project along with other local athletes in an opinion column that ran in Truckee's Sierra Sun.

The athletes wrote that the redevelopment plans are "very much in keeping with the soul and spirit of Squaw Valley."

But environmentalists say the plans to build 750 hotel-condominium units and about 1,500 new hotel bedrooms would adversely affect mountain views, traffic and water supplies.

Some 50 comments were received by a March 24 deadline on Placer County's revised notice of preparation for the Village at Squaw Valley's plans.
