SPCA Celebrates Volunteers

Posted: Updated:

This week is National Volunteer Week, where organizations are taking the time to show appreciation of their volunteers.

Monday, the SPCA of Northern Nevada starts the week off by the event 'hats off to volunteers'-- and wrap things up Saturday with awards and a breakfast. The SPCA says their organization's backbone is volunteers.

"We have about 185 active  volunteers at this time, and our volunteers do so much here," said Lilly Walker, Volunteer Coordinator at the SPCA. "They run our vaccine clinics, they wake up the animals after surgery, they walk the dogs, they socialize the cats."

The SPCA of Northern Nevada, has about 50 employees, so that's one reason why their work is so important.  But it's not just at the shelter in Reno, but Pet Smart locations where they hold adoption drives every weekend.

Today at the South Virginia street location, a few lucky animals found new homes, something that wouldn't be possible without the extra help in the field, and back at the shelter.

"It's a two way thing," said volunteer Arthur Akerson. "The animal is going to have a home, and the family will have a new family member."

"You get repaid with some true love," said Sandra Peterson. Another volunteer.

If you would like to volunteer, you can head to shelter at 4950 Spectrum Blvd, or online at spcanevada.org.
