Expo Helps First Time Home Buyers

Posted: Updated:

As the housing market continues to rebound in Northern Nevada some first-time home buyers are wondering if it's a good time to jump into the market.  That question was answered Saturday at the 2nd annual 'Roadmap to Ownership' event at John Ascuaga's Nugget.

Every circumstance is different but all in all, experts say now is the perfect time to buy a home. For one, interest rates remain low, and two, if you need a mortgage  it's easier to qualify now before new qualifying rules go in place.

"It helps pull the curtain back  relative to the mystery of the whole home buying  process," said Mark Ashworth, President of the Reno/Sparks Association of Realtors. "They have the opportunity to visit one on one with lenders, and realtors."

The expo wasn't just about mortgages, and the process of buying a home, but other important aspects like renting versus buying, inspecting versus appraising, and knowing how much one needs to pay for a home up front.

Ashworth says Northern Nevada's housing market is improving immensely, and spring is a very popular time to re-locate.  There were more than a dozen vendors on hand today, all standing by to help the first time homeowner. Also, a couple "Q and A" sessions allowed prospective buyers to ask questions directly to the professions. That information proved to be invaluable to attendees and gave them the peace of mind to buy a home.

"We don't have as much money saved up as maybe we should or want to, so the assistance programs we found out about are really helpful and probably allows us into a house," said Paul Hanson, a first-time home buyer.

In total, over 200 people came out to Saturday's expo. Last year 75 showed up. Event organizers are already looking forward to next year's expo.
