Aces Grab First Win of the Season

Reno Aces Press Release

4/4/14

Mike Bolsinger (@mbolsinger) pitched 6.2 scoreless innings and the bullpen preserved the shutout to give the Reno Aces their first victory of the season tonight, a 2-0 defeat of the visiting El Paso Chihuahuas.

It was Bolsinger's first start as a member of the Aces without allowing an earned run.

El Paso managed two hits in the top of the fourth, but Bolsinger struck out Jeff Francoeur to end the inning and retired the next 13 Chihuahuas batters in a row.

Blake Lalli (@BlakeLalli) opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning with an RBI double to left field that drove in Didi Gregorius (@DidiG18) from first base. That was all the Aces' offense would need, as the defense held strong behind Bolsinger, led by a pair of highlight-reel plays. Andy Marte made a bare-handed stab and threw Alex Castellanos out at first base in the top of the fifth, and Ender Inciarte (@enderdavid18) prevented a would-be double in the right-centerfield gap with a sliding catch in the top of the sixth to maintain the shutout.

Zeke Spruill (@zekespruill) entered the game with one out in the eighth inning, and worked out of a bases-loaded jam by inducing Francoeur to ground out to shortstop Nick Ahmed (@NickAhmed_).

Alfredo Marte (@MarteAlfredo) drove in Aaron Cunningham on an RBI groundout to add an insurance run in the bottom of the eight, and Spruill worked a perfect ninth to earn the save and complete the combined shutout. The last time the Aces registered a shutout was on Aug. 3, 2013 in a 2-0 win over New Orleans in 12 innings.

The clubs will square off again Saturday at Aces Ballpark, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. RHP Charles Brewer (@CharlesBrewerAZ) gets the ball for the Aces against LHP Jason Lane for the Chihuahuas.
