The University of Nevada plans to set up its drone research headquarters just south of downtown Reno in a newly-leased office building.

The university says the research center in a 25,000 square foot office building on Sinclair Street will take up an entire floor of the building, which is being leased to the university by the City of Reno.

"As the City continues to battle financial constraints, we have to embrace efficient, innovative and collaborative solutions. Re-purposing an existing and currently vacant building with a focus on business and community services is a win for our entire community," Reno City Manager Andrew Clinger said.

The university offers a new minor degree program on unmanned autonomous vehicles, but says the classes likely won't be held in the new building.

The research center plans to employ several engineers and UNR graduate students to partner on projects with the private sector.

"This facility would be a tangible indication of the University's commitment to contribute to business success and community well-being," University President Marc Johnson said. "We are fortunate to have city and economic development officials embracing the connection between our future economy and the University and so fully focused on the success of both."

Back in December, Nevada was selected as one of six states to house drone testing sites.
