A Texas congressman has identified the suspect in the shooting at Fort Hood as Ivan Lopez.

U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, said Wednesday's shooting happened at a medical center at the base. Additional details about the suspect weren't immediately available.

U.S. law enforcement officials say four people, including the shooter, were killed when a gunman opened fire Wednesday at Fort Hood.

One of the officials, citing official internal U.S. Justice Department updates, said 14 others were hurt. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release information by name.

The Texas Army base was the scene of a mass shooting in 2009.

Meanwhile, President Obama says the government will get to the bottom of what happened in a shooting incident at Fort Hood.

Obama says he's following the situation closely but that the situation is fluid at the Texas Army post. He says officials are doing everything they can to make sure everyone is secure.

Obama says the incident brings back painful memories of the 2009 mass shooting at Fort Hood. He says, quote, "We're heartbroken that something like this might've happened again."

Obama says people at Ford Hood have sacrificed so much for freedom and their sense of safety has been broken once again.  (AP)

Statement from Secretary of Defense Hagel on Fort Hood

Today's shooting was a terrible tragedy for the Fort Hood community, the Department of Defense, and for the nation. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. And my sympathies go out to this strong and resilient community, which has experienced this kind of senseless violence all too recently.
There is nothing more important to us as an institution than the safety and well-being of our people, and for that reason I am grateful to all the first responders who rushed to the scene. We will closely monitor the situation at Fort Hood and stay informed by what investigators and law enforcement personnel learn about the shooting.
