Brew HaHa Raises Money for Local Art Programs

Posted: Updated:

At the Sierra Arts Foundation in Reno, gallery director Chad Sweet is busy working hard to get the lighting for an exhibit just right. That's because teaching, supporting and nurturing the arts is what the foundation is devoted to.

"Programs that bring art to our alternative high schools, programs that bring music to the elementary schools. We bring music to the elder care facilities. So many things that Sierra Arts does that I don't think people realize," says development associate Kristin Moffitt.

Moffitt is one of the resident artists who provides art instruction to kids in and out of the classroom - one of many free community programs offered. But, in order to do that, the foundation relies on grants and fundraisers. And that's where John Ascuaga's Nugget in Sparks comes in. Wednesday they handed over a $44,000 check. The money will give Sierra Arts a big boost. (Last year's event raised $37,000.)

"These funds for us allow us to spread the money across our programs as needed. The Nugget has been doing this for us for 19 years, we're so delighted," says executive director Stacey Spain.

Nugget CEO Carlton Geer adds, "supporting various organizations like Sierra Arts is very important to us because we believe that a well-rounded community, including the arts, is a better community."

The money was raised during January's Brew HaHa at the Nugget. This is the 19th year the casino has hosted the benefit for Sierra Arts.

Moffitt says there's proof that children benefit from learning art - teachers have shown her improved test scores. "We need kids to learn a little bit differently so they can think differently so they can compete with what's going on in the world."

The next Brew HaHa is scheduled for January of 2015.
