Light Damage, 6 Deaths After Magnitude 8.2 Chile Quake

Posted: Updated:

Authorities in northern Chile are finding surprisingly light damage after a magnitude 8.2 earthquake.

Six deaths have been reported.

Thousands of people who were evacuated from low-lying areas are returning home, after spending a long night outside due to the threat of a tsunami. Some fishing boats were lifted onto city streets, and others were sunk, but no other major damage from the sea was apparent.

The shaking that began last night also touched off landslides that blocked roads, knocked out power for thousands, and damaged an airport. Fires destroyed several businesses. Some homes made of adobe were destroyed in a city near the quake's offshore epicenter.

As big as this quake was, experts say it's not the big one that seismologists expect to eventually hit the area. Mark Simons of the California Institute of Technology says, "Could be tomorrow, could be in 50 years."   (AP)
