From the Washoe County School District:
After a highly successful Run for Education last fall, the Education Alliance of Washoe County is planning the 2014 Run for Education. The event will be held on Sunday, Oct. 26 at Legends at Sparks Marina. There will be a 10K Run, 5K Run/Walk, and ½ mile Kids Fun Run along with a post-run Expo and Activity Area. The Education Alliance is expecting an even greater turnout of students, families, and schools this year.
The Run for Education 10K and 5K running events will begin in front of Scheels and wind through the streets of Sparks and along the running path. The Kids Fun Run will also begin and end in front of Scheels and the surrounding Activity and Expo Area.
Cash prizes will be awarded to the first, second, and third place finishers in the 10K Run and 5K Run for both the male and female divisions. Additionally, the top three Washoe County School District (WCSD) elementary schools with the highest attendance at the event will receive cash prizes along with their Kids in Motion (KIM) grant. The KIM grant is awarded to elementary schools with at least 20 participants and helps schools with physical, health, and nutrition needs.
Funds raised will also support WCSD students through the Passport Program. This program provides assistance for low-income secondary students who need support to graduate ready for college and highly-skilled careers.
Runner and educator Gary Glogovac will return as race director in 2014, and will once again provide safe and well-planned routes for all of the events.
"We are already planning for the 2014 Run for Education," Glogovac said. "It promises to be an exciting running event with some competitive events and lots of family fun."
In 2013, the Run for Education attracted 3,188 runners, including 2,230 student runners. The event raised $119,233 for WCSD bringing the eight-year total to $1.273 million donated to WCSD for physical and academic fitness.
All runners will receive a T-shirt, and student runners will also receive a medal after completing their running event. Refreshments for all runners are being provided at the Activity and Expo Area, which is open to all participants and families.
This year, the Expo will include the following activities: bounce houses, gold panning, bike rodeo, dental health, bean bag toss, rock climbing wall, fire truck, police car, Humvee, big rig demo, speed pitch, basketball, putting green, and mini rodeo activities. Several mascots will lead activities for the running events and at the Activity and Expo Area. Come for the Run – Stay for the Fun!
