National Public Health Week: Get Out Ahead

According to the United Health Foundation 2013 Health Rankings, Nevada is ranked the 37th healthiest state in the country, which is a 5-point improvement from 42nd in 2011.

* Seven in 10 deaths in the U.S. are related to preventable diseases such as obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and cancer;
* Chronic diseases are among the most prevalent, costly, and preventable of all health problems.
* 75% of our health care dollars are spent treating such diseases; 

To lower your health care costs, make sure that you and your family have an annual wellness appointment.  Also, be current on your immunizations and cancer screenings, quit smoking and maintain a healthy weight.

Public health starts at home. From family nutrition and maternal health to safety precautions and disaster preparedness, the first step the community takes toward public health are in the comfort of their own home. Empower yourself to take action through better meal planning, safety upgrades, and preparing for emergencies.

National Public Health Week (NPHW) is the American Public Health Association's annual celebration of the public health efforts in disease prevention in our communities. The goal of this week it to educate and engage people in the movement to create a healthier America for ourselves and generations to come.
