Breast Surgery After Childbirth

Posted: Updated:

49-year-old Peri Basel was unhappy with her body after having two children and breastfeeding.

"It felt like I had two socks on my chest and I really wanted my old body back."

She decided to have surgery - and new statistics show she's not alone. There's been a 70% increase in breast lifts in the past 14 years according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Doctors use a woman's own tissue and skin to tighten the breast giving it a more youthful appearance.

"Most commonly it's the patient that has had a baby or two or has had a fair weight gain and then weight loss."

The data shows more than 90,000 breast lifts were performed last year. Most of the procedures were in women ages 30 to 54.

Breast implants are still the most common plastic surgery for women.

Dr. Barry Weintraub says sometimes the combination works best.

"Usually a small implant in addition to your own lift, gives you a more appealing result."

That's what Peri chose to do.

"It's fantastic, I feel great. I feel like I'm back in my 30s."

And she says she was back to her normal routine just days after surgery.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons says the average cost of breast implant surgery is $3,500 and the average cost of an average breast lift is about $8,000 more.
