Kids Cafe Provides Free Meals for Kids During Spring Break

Posted: Updated:

Kids in the Washoe County School District are out of class for two weeks for spring break starting today. There are plenty of activities around town, but for kids who get free lunch at school, two weeks off brings an extra challenge.

Thanks to Kids Café, which is sponsored by the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, hundreds of kids 18 and under can get free breakfast and lunch during spring break. Eight-year-old Rylee Dixon was eating a Kids Cafe hot lunch at the Neil Road Recreation Center on Monday. "I ate chicken nuggets, celery and an apple then chocolate milk," she said.

The meals are paid for through federal programs like the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Child and Adult Food Care programs. Charlotte Hague-- who works for the food bank-- says the free meals, which are usually served at school, offer healthy food that kids might not otherwise get. "We'll be feeding for breakfast and lunch, around 100 to 120 children," she said.

The food bank says about 35,000 children in northern Nevada are at risk of missing meals. The meals served during vacation allow kids to spend their time off playing with their friends, and they don't have to worry about being hungry. "Everybody's excited that we can have a fun time around here and have a fun time with our friends," said Dixon, who is in third grade.

Kids Cafe will be set up on weekdays until Friday, April 11th at three locations: the Neil Road Recreation Center, the Evelyn Mount Northeast Community Center, and the Lemmon Valley Boys and Girls Club at the Joe Mitchell Center.

Breakfast will be served from 8:30am until 9 am. Lunch is served from noon to 12:30 pm.

All children up to 18 years old are welcome to eat for free.
