Nevada's dominant electricity provider is marking a safety milestone, with an announcement that it's been 27 years since there has been a lost-time injury at a natural gas-fired power plant in northwestern Nevada.

NV Energy Inc. said Monday that the last time one of the nearly 30 employees at the Fort Churchill Generating Station missed work due to an accident at was March 30, 1987.

The company says the Edison Electric Institute is crediting the 226-megawatt plant near Yerington with having the longest safety record for any fossil-fueled generating station in the nation.

The plant has two units. The first went into service in 1968. The second, in 1971.

Officials say it can produce enough electricity to serve about 135,000 Nevada homes.  (AP)
