Crunch Time For Health Insurance Deadline

Posted: Updated:

The deadline to sign up for the "Silver State Health Insurance Exchange" is Monday. In order to beat the deadline, Nevada "Health Link" held one last push to help Nevadans sign up before potentially facing fines.

More than 400 people got health insurance policies Saturday during the fair at Truckee Meadows Community College, and event organizers are calling it a success.

"It's a very good success," said CJ Bawden, Communications Officer for Nevada Health Link. "We're seeing individuals come out of the computer lab after they're finished enrolling, happy."

 But not everybody agrees.

"It's worse than the D.M.V., but you got to do what you got to do," said resident Martha Gerhardt.

Some people waited two, three, and in some cases even four hours to sign up.

The event was so popular, Nevada Health Link officials could not guarantee everybody would be taken care of Saturday. However,  if you try to sign up before Monday, it's okay. They're offering a 60 day extension, but you must prove you have made an attempt.

Just because the Obama Administration issued an extension to the federal deadline last week, that does not apply to Nevada Health Link.  A lot of people who completed the process at the fair said it's a huge relief, and the wait was worth it.

"It was like finishing finals," said Kathy Martin. "I'm very hungry. It's one o'clock now, I'm going to eat. It's intense, but like I said, it's well worth it and everybody was very helpful."

Bawden says if you do not have insurance by Monday's deadline-- either through the exchange program, or your employer, you will face a $95 penalty on your taxes next year, or 1% of your income, whichever is greater.
