The Novelists Release Book #1

Posted: Updated:

When like-minded musicians come together on a mission the result can be a magical journey. And that's what's happened with the Novelists. They are four musicians with ties to Reno who have brought their talents together to make amazing music that is based in lyrical rock, in jazz and in storytelling.

"That's really what sets us apart, is that we are all storytellers and we have a great blend of talents," says founder of the group, Joel Ackerson.

Members of the band were hand-selected by Ackerson as he heard them play with other various bands. While two have moved away from Reno, they all have ties to the music scene here and to University of Nevada. And they are taking their unique brand of music to the stage at John Ascuaga's Nugget in Sparks this weekend to release their second CD. A year ago they embarked on creating it through their "Book Club."

"It was a different way of approaching it," says pianist and vocalist Eric Andersen. "We created a following on social media and got followers to invest in us. By being a member of the book club, they each got two original songs from us every month. It gave us a solid following and it forced us to be creative. We had to write two really good songs every month. Now we've taken the best of the best for this CD called Book #1."

Sounds simple enough, but actually putting their show together takes a lot of detailed organization. They play a lot of gigs at a time when they are together but they also deal with distance.

Zack Teran who plays acoustic bass has played with a lot of jazz groups around town and is always up for a challenge.

They will unveil their mix of storytelling and lyrical jazz in the Showroom at John Ascuaga's Nugget at 7:30 Saturday night. And they will have a CD for sale there.
