From the Washoe County School District:
The Washoe County School District's (WCSD) virtual school, North Star Online School, unveiled its new name and introduced its new principal at its new location in the Glenn Hare Center Wednesday. WCSD and the North Star staff and students held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the services it offers to more than 250 students in the Washoe County School District.
"We are excited to celebrate the unique virtual education that North Star offers. We have local, caring teachers that work with our students every day, computer labs that offer a change of pace or for when extra help is needed, and a high-quality education that students can take with them wherever they go," explained Katy Hadley, North Star Online School Principal. "A traditional brick-and-mortar school and a fixed schedule doesn't work as well for some students. North Star can meet the needs of those families."
During an open house, attendees toured the new school building, experienced a virtual education, met teachers and staff, participated in a science experiment and more.
North Star Online School, located at 350 Hunter Lake Drive, provides online courses for K-12 students who prefer a flexible schedule due to competitive sports, professional commitments, illness, travel, or who would like to have a more hands-on role in their own education. Fulltime students are enrolled tuition-free, and can be concurrently enrolled at their zoned school, which allows those students to take classes, such as band or art, that cannot be offered online. They can also meet with local teachers, who are located on campus, and participate in field trips with their fellow students at North Star Online School.
Enrollment applications and deadlines are available at www.NorthStarOnlineSchool.net and at the North Star School Office.
