UNR Debate Team Wins National Honors

Posted: Updated:

The University of Nevada is celebrating winning a national title this week. But it's not for sports....

The university's parliamentary debate team won big honors for its performance this academic year.

While they've won plenty of awards in the past, and a good number this season as well, this is the first time they have won the national sweepstakes title which accounts for the team's performance over the whole season.

"It requires strength from the top to the bottom of the team. I feel as though it's a very successful team that we had this year-- very, very hardworking," says Jonathan McGuire, UNR Debate Team Captain.

To win this title - the teams accumulate points in competitions throughout the season from September to March.

At the end - the team with the overall highest point score wins.

There are 24 members of the team and they compete in pairs of two-- with just about 20 to 30 minutes to prepare once they get their topics.

And those topics range from the serious, like politics to the frivolous, like who will win the Super Bowl. "The topics can be literally anything. Usually you'll have the us federal government take an action, and you'll debate whether or not that action should or should not be taken."

And if you'd like to see them debate in person, they're holding a public debate on April 24 that starts at 6 pm in the Wells Fargo Auditorium in the Knowledge Center on campus.

A northern Nevada man did not have symptoms of a heart attack. Rather, he felt a little tightness in his chest during high-intensity workouts and he suspected asthma.
