Report: 86% of Reno Roads 'Poor' or 'Okay'

CORRECTION:  We originally reported that this study was conducted by the Portland Cement Association instead of The National Transportation Research Group. We regret and apologize for this error.

A new report says roads in the Reno-Sparks area are in dire need of work, but local officials are debating against the data.

"The local roads, they're in a little bit disrepair. It doesn't seem too bad, I definitely have seen worse," says Reno business owner Caren Johnson.

John Mullin of Reno adds, "It's in dire straits in some areas and some areas are pretty good. They're doing some work on a lot of it."

And Staci Laiji of Fernley told us, "I just came back from California and I would say the Nevada roads are way better than the California roads. The moment you hit Nevada it's pretty clear and clean."

The study was done by the The National Transportation Research Group. It says 86% of the roads in the area were found to be "okay" or in "poor" condition - meaning, it has potholes, cracks or bumpiness.

I talked to the Regional Transportation Commission and they say the report is misleading. They looked into the numbers and told me it all came from state and federal roads like highways.

They recently did a study of their own that they say has more realistic numbers. "And that pavement condition shows that 79% of the roads are in good condition, only 7% are in poor condition," says senior engineer Howard Riedl.

RTC is asking you to report potholes to officials in Reno-Sparks and Washoe County.
