Winter Storm Warning, Winter Weather Advisory Issued for Region

The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a winter weather advisory for snow which is in effect from 11 pm Tuesday to 5 am Thursday.

Timing: snow will begin tonight with the heaviest snow expected during the day Wednesday.

Snow accumulations: 12 to 18 inches above 7,000 feet with 3 to 8 inches at Lake Tahoe level.

Snow levels: starting around 6,500 feet tonight...lowering to below lake level by Wednesday morning. Snow levels may bounce between 5,500 and 6,500 feet during the day Wednesday possibly limiting accumulations on lower elevation roadways.

* Locations include: Alpine County, El Dorado, Mono and Nevada Counties in California and Douglas and Washoe Counties in Nevada

Impacts: snow will create hazardous driving conditions on all Sierra passes and periodically on roads within the Tahoe Basin. Chain controls and delays are likely especially above 7,000 feet.

Precautionary/preparedness actions:

Snow is expected to pose an inconvenience to travelers. Roads will become slick and hazardous with snow and ice first developing on bridges and overpasses. Motorists should slow down and use caution. A winter storm warning remains in effect from 3 pm this afternoon to 11 am Thursday above 5,500 feet for Western Plumas County, Lassen National Park and the west slopes of the Northern
Sierra Nevada.

Impacts: gusty wind and heavy snow could bring periods of significantly reduced visibility and difficult travel conditions. Chain restrictions and travel delays are likely.

Confidence: high confidence in periods of heavy snow and strong wind over higher terrain.

Timing: snow begins this afternoon with periods of snow into Thursday. Heaviest snow is expected Wednesday into Wednesday night.

Locations include: Lassen National Park, Donner Pass, Echo Summit, Carson Pass.

Snow accumulations: 8 to 16 inches above 5,000 feet. 12 to 24 inches above 7,000 feet with locally higher amounts over the peaks.

Wind: southwest wind gusts up to 45 mph locally higher over remote peaks.

Precautionary/preparedness actions:

A winter storm warning for heavy snow means severe winter weather conditions are expected. Significant amounts of snow are forecast that will make travel difficult. Only travel if you must. Keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
