Officials: More Washington State Mudslide Victims Found

Posted: Updated:

Washington state officials say searchers have found more bodies as hundreds of rescuers and volunteers scour the debris of a massive landslide.

Snohomish County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Shari Ireton said the death toll has increased, but she said the number of bodies found Tuesday hasn't been confirmed.

Authorities previously put the death toll at 14 after a rain-soaked hillside collapsed Saturday about 55 miles north of Seattle.

Searchers had warned they were likely to find more bodies. They were working off a list of 176 people unaccounted for, though some names were believed to be duplicates.

Washington State Patrol spokesman Bob Calkins says some Darrington residents with expertise in operating heavy equipment are helping rescuers in the search. (AP)
