Nevada Press Release
A four-run second inning was not enough for the Nevada softball team to overtake rival UNLV Saturday afternoon in Mountain West action. With the 7-4 victory Saturday afternoon, the Rebels take the first two games of the three-game set, and secured three points in the Governor's Series.
UNLV (12-18, 2-0 MW) struck first in the game, plating one run in the bottom of the first off a RBI double to the left center field gap. In the next half inning, the Wolf Pack (18-12, 0-2 MW) brought four runs across on five hits. With two runners on base, senior Sara Parsons drilled a three-run shot to dead center, her second homerun of the season. After sophomore Hannah Harger reached on a single, classmate Danielle Wiltz connected on her league-leading fourth triple to put the Pack on top 4-1.
Nevada ran into some trouble in the bottom half of the third as the Rebels loaded the bases with no outs. A pair of back-to-back, two-run singles by UNLV's Pauline Monreal and Tayler Van Acker scored four runs and gave the home team a 5-4 lead after three innings.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Rebels added a couple of insurance runs. To start the frame, sophomore Amanda Weis turned a line drive snag into a double play, gunning down the runner leaning off of first base. The next UNLV batter reached on an infield single and was brought around to score on a two-run homerun by Monreal, her second long ball in the series, extending the home team's lead to a 7-4 advantage.
Junior pitcher Megan Dortch was dealt the loss, dropping her record to 7-6 on the year. Dortch threw two innings, giving up five earned runs on five hits and two walks. Senior Karlyn Jones entered the game in the third in relief and tossed the remaining four innings, surrendering two earned runs on four hits while striking out two.
Junior Ashley Butera and Harger each collected two hits each, accounting for half of the Wolf Pack hits in the game.
Nevada wraps up the weekend series with the Rebels tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. from Eller Media Stadium. Sunday's game will be available at www.NevadaWolfPack.TV as part of the Mountain West Network. No audio-only broadcast is available this weekend.
