Preparing for Tax Day

Posted: Updated:

April 15, also known as Tax Day is a little less than a month away.

Last month, we told you about a program that prepares tax returns for free, while making University of Nevada, Reno Business and Finance students learn through experience.

By Saturday afternoon, 750 tax returns had been filed, and organizers expect about 200 more before the tax deadline.

"You're given a pile of W2's and all of their income forms, and all of their expense forms," said Megan Breyer, an accounting finance major said. "It's detective work to have an half an hour to put their entire life together."

Students like Megan at the university get class credit for the tax preparation with VITA, or Volunteer Income Tax Assistance.

The program offers free help to people who make less than $55,000 a year.

A couple dozen people came out to Community Services Agency in Reno Saturday, and a lot of them say this program has been very helpful.

It's a really friendly, helpful service," said Genevive Debernardis. "Nice people to talk to, and it makes me feel good I'm helping out UNR students get some hands on experience."

"I'm very blessed," said Kim Dill. "Everybody is so nice and very caring."

Just in case you have not filed your tax returns, you have 23 days to do so.
