Nevada Teen Unemployment Remains High

Posted: Updated: Date / Time

Nevada has one of the highest unemployment rates in the nation, but one group in particular has been hit extra hard.

"The teen unemployment rate is quite high relative to the rest of the population," said Nevada Chief Economist Bill Anderson.

According to Anderson, the unemployment for Nevadans between the ages of 16 and 24 is 17.4%. That's double the statewide rate of 8.7%. However, in 2010, the unemployment rate for Nevadans between 16 and 24 was 23%.

Wild Island Family Adventure Park in Sparks hires teens from across the region, even some as young as age 14.

"We like to give kids the opportunity to get some job experience," said Kelly Nicolai, director of admissions and group sales. "Not a lot of places hire a 14-year-old."

Saturday and Monday, the park is holding a job fair at their facility located at 250 Wild Island Court in Sparks.

They plan on hiring nearly 300 seasonal workers, and most of those workers are teenagers. Nicolai says thousands have already put in their applications, and hundreds of teens will show up to the hiring event.

"Even the opportunity to just interview is a great experience," said Nicolai. "In the future, people will do interviews their entire lives for different positions."

Experts say the job market is improving.

"Labor markets appear to be on the mend and hopefully that'll translate into a more favorable labor market for our younger residents," said Anderson.
