From the Washoe County School District:

Hundreds of Washoe County School District (WCSD) parents and students are slated to attend Family Access Day at the University of Nevada, Reno on Saturday, March 22 in the Joe Crowley Student Union. Family Access Day is designed to help parents of potential first generation college students learn about resources in place to help their students navigate the pathway to college and highly-skilled careers.

WCSD is dedicated to helping each of its 63,000 students graduate from high school with the essential academic knowledge and work-related skills that will enable them to achieve their future education and career goals. At the event, parents will learn more about their children's learning milestones and the importance of family participation in a child's education. Three Family Access Days were held this year for parents across the District.

"Family Access Day is designed to help families navigate the public education system from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade," said WCSD Superintendent Pedro Martinez. "As superintendent, it is my goal to see every WCSD student receive a high school diploma and go on to be successful in college and highly-skilled careers. Family Access Day offers a great opportunity for us to work together with our families to achieve those important goals."

"Families play such a crucial role in the education of their children, and they need to know how to help their students succeed in school," said Maria Fernandez, coordinator of Parent University. "Family Access Day offers them the skills they need to effectively guide their children in their educational journeys."

Some of the featured workshops of Family Access Day include:
„h Transition to Kindergarten
„h Virtual Pre-K
„h Supporting Literacy at Home
„h Supporting Math at Home
„h Understanding Your Child's Data
„h Learn the Importance of Early College Preparation
„h Pathway to College and the 4-Year Academic Plan
„h Being a Competitive University Applicant

Family Access Day is free, although advance registration is required: breakfast, lunch, childcare, and Spanish interpretation will be provided at no cost. The event is a cooperative effort between WCSD Parent University, Truckee Meadows Community College, UNR, the Center for Student Cultural Diversity, and the Washoe K-12 Education Foundation.
