The Political Match-up for Governor

Posted: Updated:

Now that the candidate filing is done and the dust has settled there appears to be one hole in the candidate line up for Nevada Governor. Republican Governor Brian Sandoval is there, and there are nine democrats listed as well. But none is high-profile statewide and none has big financial backing.

"And none of the candidates on the democratic side has the endorsement of the state party," points out Fred Lokken, Political Science Professor at TMCC.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid had promised a serious democratic candidate back in February, but that just hasn't materialized.

"I think that at the time he did have a candidate in mind," Lokken says. "But I think things changed after that interview."

And Lokken says that has left state democrats a big disconcerted.

"It's embarrassing for the Democratic Party in the state to have the highest ranking position in the state, that of governor and not even have a viable candidate," Lokken says.

Meantime UNR Political Science Professor Eric Herzik  says he sees why the democrats didn't put their most powerful possibility forward.

"The match-up should have been Ross Miller and Sandoval," Herzik said, referring to Secretary of State Ross MIller who is terming out in that office and running for Attorney General instead of Governor.

"It was a very high risk for Miller, who doesn't want a loss in his record. So he'll cool his heels as Attorney General and four years from now he'll probably run for Governor.

And if that all plays out, it is a prime example of Nevada's balance of power and why we are swing state, politically. Both experts say that the lack of a big democratic name running for Governor could result in low democratic voter turn out. Which we'll know come June 10th.
