Many Reno Mayoral Candidates Running for First Time

Posted: Updated:

There are 20 candidates listed in the race for Reno Mayor and half of them are making their very first run for office.

Some political analysts say that while that shows a lot of community interest and brings a lot of ideas to the political table for Reno, it's unusual for so many people to run for such a high level office, first off.

"In the game of politics it's called jumping the line," says political science professor Erik Herzik at UNR. "Usually people don't start at the level of Governor or Mayor, they run for say city council and climb the political ladder."

But businessman Robert Avery says he's up to the challenge and that his business experience will carry his campaign.

"I have the right set of skills to lead this city to a new beginning. I have a pinpoint plan for economy development here and I have the experience to give me the advantage as Mayor."

And Delores Aiazzi says her passion for this city will fuel her campaign, even though she's new to politics.

"I really want to bring back citizen involvement," Aiazzi says. "We no longer have neighborhood boards and I think people should be involved."

Aiazzi is the wife of former Reno City Councilman Dave Aiazzi. She says she has been involved through her husband and is currently on several boards in town and really wants to see the city's momentum continue.

The mayoral candidates are among those who will be debating at UNR tonight in an event organized by the Nevada Republican Assembly.
