Giant Nevada-Shaped Birthday Cake to be Served on Friday

Posted: Updated:

Later this week you'll be able to have a slice of Nevada's official Battle Born birthday cake in Carson City.

The huge cake is under construction, and when it's finished it'll weigh 1,300 pounds. It's a re-creation of a cake originally baked in 1964 by Sewell's Bakery in Reno to celebrate Nevada's 100th birthday. "When they first baked it, Sewell's used 1,152 eggs, 200 pounds of sugar and 600 pounds of icing," said Heidi Englund of the Nevada Historical Society. She and some friends are creating a similar cake for this year's Nevada Sesquicentennial celebration.

Englund says the idea came to her boss as he was looking through old photos of the 100th birthday cake and asked if she could bake one for this year's anniversary. "I had just baked someone's birthday cake and all of a sudden he thinks 'I can bake a cake that's 13-feet by 21-feet'," she said laughing. "I said ‘no problem.' I called up my best friend Misti (Gower) and the rest is history."

Englund, and Gower needed big ovens to bake the 170 sheet cakes that will make up the huge cake, so they went to Englund's husband Eric, who is the chef at Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center in Carson City. "I said, 'honey, can we use your ovens to bake a cake?' We were going to serve it somewhere else, but we found out that Carson Tahoe wanted to be a part of this very much," Englund said.

Volunteers plan to frost the cake with 600 pounds of frosting on Thursday. They'll put the finishing touches on the huge dessert early Friday morning and then the public is invited to come to the Sage Cafe at Carson Tahoe Medical Regional Medical Center Friday from 1pm to 6:30 pm to join the celebration. There will be entertainment and festivities and Englund expects to serve more than 2,000 pieces of cake. She says there will plenty for everyone.
