Winners in a national Barbecue contest were recently announced in San Marcos, Texas - and one Reno man won a silver medal in the Asian Marinade category!
Over 500 entries were entered in the annual National Barbecue Association Awards of Excellence contest, held March 5th of this year.
Mr. G's Hawaii-Style spicy apple ginger teriyaki won second place while the spicy garlic teriyaki took fourth place in the same category. Mr. G's plum and pineapple took fourth place finish in the barbecue marinade-citrus/fruit category.
Mr. G's was started a few years ago by George Kapahee who was born in Maui and raised with the cooking of his mother and his grandmother. After getting out of the service, he settled in Reno.
The current product line includes spicy to mild and everything in-between. More than 10 varieties are sold in stores and in restaurants like Blue Moon Pizza. Other locations include Whole Foods Market, Raley's and Scolari's.
