California Highway Patrol says a trooper arrested a man Sunday night for driving three times over the legal alcohol limit.

On Sunday, March 16th just before 8:30pm, troopers say an officer made a traffic stop on a black Chevrolet Astro Van going over 80 miles per hour on U.S. Highway 395 north, just south of Convict Lake Road.

When the officer walked up to the window, he says he smelled alcohol and saw an open container at the passenger's feet.

After a field sobriety test, the officer arrested 24-year-old Ethan Gilbert of Newhall, California for driving under the influence and booked him into Mono County Jail in Bridgeport.

Troopers say Gilbert had a preliminary alcohol screening test of 0.27% - more than three times the 0.08% legal limit.

Gilbert's unidentified passenger was provided a ride home into Mammoth Lakes by California Highway Patrol. The van was towed and Gilbert was issued a driver license suspension.
