March Madness Means Big Bucks For Local Casinos

Posted: Updated:

It's one of the best times of the year for sports.

Of course, we are talking about the NCAA college basketball tournament, which tips off Tuesday.

About $12 billion a year is bet on the two-week tournament and places like John Ascuaga's Nugget loves cashing in.

"This is bigger than the Super Bowl. We have people coming from all over the west to bet, from Washington and Oregon," said Jennifer Pruett, supervisor for William Hill Sports Book.

The weather is good this week and that means many Californians can make it over the pass and place a bet.

Pruett said most betting won't start until after Tuesday's play in games.

She said most of the money starts pouring in about middle of this week.

The Nugget has a number of contests this year and they are also offering in progress betting for people who can't make it before tip off.

The Nugget is moving and renovating their sports book. It will be open they tell us by the end of the summer, so all this March Madness cash will help with renovation.

"It's going to be packed, so get here early. We'll have drink specials and $2.50 hot dogs with a beer or so day if you don't drink."
