Maytan Concert Band Grows With Experience, Age

Posted: Updated:

For anyone who's ever played in a concert band, there is one here in Reno you might be interested in joining.

When the Maytan Concert Band started four years ago there were just a couple of rules:

  • you had to have an interest in music
  • you had to have an instrument to play
  • you had to be over 55

"We started with just five people," Iris Matan says. "And we have about 40 now. We have musicians from all walks of life and we play in rest homes and at picnics and we even played for Artown a couple of years ago."

"I am going to be 80," says Ken Willrich. "But I'm not the oldest. In fact, I am about eight in line for seniority here."

"I practice more now than I ever did in high school," Bobbie Davis says. "I love the camaraderie and everyone knows not to book me into anything on Monday nights because I have band."

The group currently meets at the Maytan Music Center at 777 South Center Street in Reno. When it closes next month they will move their practices to the Coral Academy's gym.

They've recently waived their age requirement to make it even more of a municipal band for everyone who enjoys concert band.
