Candidate Filing Ends

Posted: Updated:

This has been a record-breaking election and the candidate filing is just ending.

"The last record I could find in recent history was nine candidates for Reno Mayor back in 1995," said Reno City Clerk Lynnette Jones today. "This list doubles that and we still have a couple of hours."

And that year was one of high interest as well. It was the year Jeff Griffin, Jessica Sferrazza and Martha Gould all ran. This year three term Mayor Bob Cashell has termed out and it's almost a free-for-all for those running. Some are known names like County Commissioner Marsha Berkbigler and City Councilwoman Hillary Shieve. Others are former candidates for city government including Chad Denhe and Erik Holland. And some are newcomers.

"I'm hoping that the high interest in the race translates into a higher voter turnout," Jones said.

And at the Registrar of Voters Office for Washoe County, officials were also impressed with the turnout for candidates.

"It has been pretty steady here for two weeks," said Registrar of Voters Luanne Cutler. "And we have more than 200 candidates to appear on a Washoe County Ballot and that's a lot!"

The filing is done...the campaigning is about to really begin. The primary election is June 10th.
