Rebirth Of Reno Begins With Image Change

Posted: Updated:

We've all heard Reno needs to reinvent itself, but what still needs to be done?

For my weekend show Face the State, I spoke with Dennis Cuneo, a former executive for Toyota and board member for two Fortune 500 companies. Now the President of DC Strategic Advisors, Cuneo said he recently moved here and sees plenty of untapped potential for the Biggest Little City. He said the rebirth of Reno begins with the city changing its image.

"When you arrive here at the airport, what do you see? You see slot machines, advertisements for casinos, gentleman's clubs or sometimes taxis with Mustang Ranch on top. It's not a good impression and Reno isn't really about that anymore."

Cuneo said gaming and hospitality will always be a huge part of Nevada's economy, but it's time to mix in some other revenue streams. He said one way Reno could really do that is by bringing in high tech, manufacturing companies.

Right now Reno has a great opportunity to do just that.

Tesla is an electric car maker, based out of California and is looking to expand. Earlier this month, Tesla named Reno one of four finalists to land a new factory.

Cuneo said Tesla would add about 6,500 jobs. "If we were to secure the Tesla project that would do a lot of things and do a lot for our image. If you can imagine across the country, that would be big news that Tesla decided to select Reno. The fact that we are even in the hunt is a good thing."

He said a final announcement on where Tesla will set up shop should be made within the next couple months.

You can watch my interview in its entirety on Face the State this Saturday at 4:30 am or Sunday at 5:30am.
