The American Heart Association recognized a local child care center on Friday for the efforts in encouraging healthy behavior.
Ginny's Child Care on Reactor Way in Reno recently created a wellness policy through the Healthy Way to Grow that includes serving lower-fat foods, and healthier meals like whole grains and vegetables.
"We changed to a lot of fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables and not canned items, that we do a lot of fresh chicken things like that instead of the chicken nuggets," says Ginny's Child Garden Center Director Jennifer Hunt.
The wellness policy also encourages more physical activity.
The Washoe County Health District donated play equipment to the child care center Friday to help younger children stay active.
