Investigators Await Autopsy Results on Spanish Springs Body

Posted: Updated:

The Washoe County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate a missing persons case - involving  Spanish Springs woman, Colleen Muhl.

We first told you Wednesday night, crews found *unidentified human remains in the backyard of her home.

Detectives are still waiting for the results of a medical examination to determine who the remains officially belong to after searching the home that morning.

"We were able to determine through cellular phone records that Mr. Muhl didn't leave the house after 3 p.m. on the 17th. So, that was another building block to lead us to come back to do a more thorough examination of the yard," says Lt. Tom Green.

Deputies also received a tip that Gerald Muhl had been moving rocks in his backyard after Colleen disappeared.

He told investigators Colleen died in California. Shortly after that he took his life.

Neighbors told us it's been a shock to their community because the Muhls were great people.

Meanwhile, Colleen's niece, Michelle, says this case has been frustrating for her and her family as they tried to get answers from a number of people, including Gerald. "All of the stuff had hit the fan with rumors and people saying aunt Colleen died at home..." says Michelle Jones.

"The more we talked about it, stories were not matching up to what Gerry had told each of us."

Once we receive a positive identification of the remains, we'll let you know as soon as possible.
