The race for Sheriff in Washoe County is filling up with candidates and experience.

Wednesday morning Jim Lopey announced his candidacy. He's had 35 years of experience including in the military, with the Sheriff's Office and training with the FBI. He has a ten-point plan for improving the department including more efficiency, hiring veterans and moving more towards community-oriented law enforcement.

"We'll be able to get more done if officers are in touch with the community and we can actually do more than be firefighters, you know, just running around putting fires out."

Jim Beltron was with the department for 26 and a half years. He had quite a tour of duties from working in the jail to working with the SWAT team. He retired two years ago and now wants to put his experience to work for the community.

"I believe in service over self," he says. "And I have a lot to offer."

You may see him in your neighborhood campaigning, but don't expect to be asked for money. He says times are hard and he doesn't plan to ask anyone to help him with campaign.

Tim Kuzanek is the current undersheriff. He actually announced his candidacy in January. He has more than 20 years on the force and he has the endorsement of the Mayors of both Reno and Sparks and of the current Sheriff, Mike Haley.

And Chuck Allen is hoping to change branches of service. He's been with the Air Force, Air National Guard and the Nevada Highway Patrol and now hopes to become Sheriff. He says his leadership sets him apart.

"I've earned the respect and the trust of the people of Washoe County," he says. "And I feel like I have the experience and the means to see the department become more efficient and to restore morale."

You can read more about them on their own websites:

(Jim Beltron has no website set up yet)

The filing window is open through Friday.
