Sheriff Ken Furlong has released the name of the pilot killed Sunday in the pine nut range near Carson City.

Sheriff Furlong says officials learned about the Cessna crash just before 2 p.m., after a Sheriff's Aero Squadron pilot flew over the crash site several miles east of Carson City, in the Pinion Hills.

Sheriff Furlong says pilot 59-year-old Joseph James Miceli of Wellington was killed. The aircraft has been identified as one of the several owned by Miceli.

A preliminary investigation suggests Miceli left from Wellington in his Cesma 120 Saturday afternoon. On Sunday, at approximately the same time as the discovery of the aircraft, Miceli was being reported missing to Lyon County authorities. It is not known at this time if Miceli ever arrived at the Carson City airport, or if he was returning to Wellington.

An exact time of the crash has not been determined.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are helping with the investigation.

Miceli's body was transported to the Washoe County Medical Examiner's Office where an autopsy will be performed.
