Domestic Violence Awareness on International Women's Day

Posted: Updated:

Saturday was International Women's Day.  It's a day to show appreciation to the women in your life, but at the same time, it serves as an opportunity to raise awareness of domestic violence.

The group, Entre Mujeres/ Among Us Women, put on an event Saturday that recognized both local women, and those from around the world. However, they also took the time raise awareness of the challenges women may face at home.

"We have to realize that domestic violence doesn't happen in one specific group of people, or class of people," said Xiomara Rodriguez with Entire Mujeres.

The most recent stats from the United States Department of Justice show that women make up 85 percent of domestic violence victims, and that every 9 seconds, a woman in the United States is beaten or assaulted in some way.

Saturday's gathering, though, was all about women, young and old, from all walks of life. They came together to show support of each other, and unite as one.

It means we all come together," said Summer Dressler. "Respect each other and what we've been through, what we'll go through and how we'll get through things."
