From Nevada 150:
On Friday, March 21, 2014 from 1 to 6 p.m., Nevadans are invited to be a part of history and attend the Battle Born Birthday Cake Celebration taking place at Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center. A signature Nevada 150 event, the festivities will commemorate the 150th anniversary of when President Lincoln signed into law the legislation passed by Congress enabling Nevada Statehood on March 21, 1864.
The event will feature entertainment and a birthday cake, similar to the historic centennial cake event held in 1964. The Battle Born Birthday Cake committee has undertaken the challenge of creating the cake, weighing in at 1,300 pounds with frosting, being constructed in the shape of the state of Nevada, consisting of 9,000 slices and spanning 13-feet-by-21-feet. Earlier in the day, First Lady Kathleen Sandoval will cut the cake using the historic sword of Nevada's 5th Governor Charles Stevenson.
"The Battle Born Birthday Cake Committee deserves a huge thank you for creating such a ‘sweet' event – pun intended," said Lt. Governor Brian Krolicki, also chairman of the Sesquicentennial Commission. "As someone who has a real sweet tooth, what better way to celebrate Nevada's birthday than with cake weighing in at over 1,300 pounds. Tying in the history of Nevada's Centennial celebration with the Sesquicentennial, makes this occasion all the more special."
Festivities will consist of a performance by the state's "Honorary Sesquicentennial Poet" Waddie Mitchell, an appearance by Mark Twain portrayed by the acclaimed McAvoy Layne, a special performance of Sarah Winnemucca portrayed by Dianna Borges, the University of Nevada, Reno Cadet Marching Band, James Lee Reeves who will be debuting his Nevada 150 anthem, "Battle Born, Nevada Proud" and special "appearances" by other historical Nevadans, Nevada Sesquicentennial Commissioners and others. Along with the public, those in the community whose birthday falls on Oct. 31 are invited to attend the event, grab a piece of cake and take a photo with all other shared birthday attendees at the historic event.
"Carson Tahoe Health is excited to host this historic event celebrating this special day in our state's capitol where it all began," said Ed Epperson, CEO, of Carson Tahoe Health. "As a community partner, we are proud to be a part of Nevada's Sesquicentennial and look forward to the celebration."
The event will be held inside the Sage Café at Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center, 1600 Medical Parkway, North Carson City. Guests are advised to park in lot 3. The public is invited to come and enjoy cake at the celebratory Open House from 1 to 6 p.m.
