Washoe County Wood Stove Exchange Program Begins

Posted: Updated:

From the Washoe County Health District:

The Washoe County Health District and the University of Nevada, Reno Business Environmental Program are sponsoring the 2014 Wood Stove Change-Out Program, providing qualified residents of Washoe County financial incentives up to $1,100 to replace old, dirty-burning wood stoves with new, efficient, cleaner-burning stoves. Rebates will be available through participating Washoe County retailers for the purchase of EPA-certified wood, pellet, or gas stoves.

Up to 197 stoves will be exchanged during the program which is only available to residents within the Washoe County Health District areas affected by the Keep It Clean Know the Code winter burn code regulations. A list of zip codes for those areas, approved stove retailers, other qualifying guidelines, and a link to the UNRBEP application packet can be found at www.OurCleanAir.com.

"The Wood Stove Change-Out Program couldn't come at a better time," said Washoe County Health District Air Quality Monitoring and Planning Branch Chief Dan Inouye. "We are ending the Know the Code program for the winter, and couldn't have a better way of thanking our citizens for Keeping It Clean and following our burn code advisories than providing this great exchange program. People can save themselves hundreds of dollars and keep our air cleaner at the same time by upgrading their stoves to more fuel efficient and pollution free devices."

Funding for the 2014 Wood Stove Change-Out Program was made possible by a settlement between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Edge Products, LLC, a business that was fined for non-compliance in 2013. The University of Nevada, Reno | Business Environmental Program will administer the funds. UNRBEP has experience in similar rebate programs, with an exchange program currently underway in Carson City and Douglas County. Links to the UNRBEP programs can be found at www.unrbep.org and www.OurCleanAir.com.

Qualified customers will instantly see savings up to $1,100 on their invoice when they purchase their new stove.  Rebates for the 2014 Wood Stove Change-Out Program will be paid directly to the approved participating Washoe County retailers. The rebates will apply to the purchase and installation of new EPA certified wood, pellet, or gas stoves by licensed contractors, and verified disposal of old stoves. The rebates will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis according to Inouye.
