'Awaken' Organization Rescues Local Sex Trafficking Victims

Posted: Updated:

The sex trade preys on the youngest and most innocent in our community. Statistics show it has become the number one crime in our world today.

According to the U.S. Department of State, 80% of sex trafficking victims are women, 50% are minors.

Overall, sex trafficking is estimated to be a $32 billion.

For this week's Face the State, I sat down with John McKendricks, a board member for Awaken, which is a local, nonprofit, Christian organization working to combat sex trafficking in our area.

They help rescue victims of sex trafficking.

"One of our more interesting programs offers backpacks, or live packs we call them. The girls get a change of clothes and other essentials. They are also provided with Go Phones that aren't connected to their pimps because oftentimes their communication is restricted."

McKendricks said all of the money for their programs comes from local churches and other people in the community that just want to help.

Part of leading victims of sex trafficking down the path of healing is helping them emotionally and spiritually as well.

"We want to see people who have only known nationalization and people that have only known what it's like to be exploited to find a community that's restorative and our belief in the gospel brings us to that."

Awaken always needs money to help victims of sex trafficking. Head to their website, and you can donate there.

You can watch the entire interview on my weekend show Face the State Sunday at 5:30am and 4pm.
