The FBI says it’s seeking a possible witness in a series of murders that happened in the 1970's. One of those murders happened in Reno in 1976.

On Friday, investigators said they are seeking a white man, at the time, was in his late 20s to early 30 who was in San Mateo County, California between January 1976 and April 1976 with a vehicle that had Nevada license plates.

Anyone with information should contact the FBI San Francisco Field Office at 415-553-7400 then press 0 and advise it is in regards to the Gypsy Hill cases. All calls are confidential.

In March, FBI representatives announced that DNA from that February 1976 Reno murder matched samples found in San Mateo County, where five other murders took place between January and April of that year.

In 1979, a woman named Cathy Woods confessed to the Reno murder. She was tried and convicted of killing 19-year-old Michelle Mitchell in the area of 9th and Evans Avenue. Mitchell's body was later found in nearby garage. She was a sophomore nursing student at the University of Nevada when she died.

Authorities say Woods' DNA was not found at that crime scene. However, DNA that was recovered was found at the five other crime scenes in San Mateo County. The victims were 18-year-old Veronica Ann "Ronnie" Cascio, 14-year-old Tatiana Marie "Tanya" Blackwell, 17-year-old Paula Louse Baxter, 26-year-old Carol Lee Booth and 19-year-old Denise Lampe. All had been stabbed to death, a few of them found with rope or cord tied around their necks.

Authorities are still looking for whose DNA was found at those crimes scenes. Blackwell and Cascio both died in Pacifica, Baxter in Millbrae, Booth in South San Francisco, and Lampe in Daly City. All the women had long brown hair, parted in the middle.

Thursday, FBI Special Agent in Charge, Jerry Bessette announced authorities would canvass neighborhoods starting next week asking people if they remember anything from around that timeframe about the unsolved cases.

Reno police say Woods will remain in custody until they can confirm she was not involved in this case. She's currently serving a life sentence in prison.

An official suspect has never been identified in the so-called "Gypsy Hill Murders."

"The main purpose here is to ask everyone to reach back into their memories and if remember anything unusual happened, let police know."

The Federal Bureau of Investigation, San Mateo County Sheriff's Office, Daly City Police Department, Pacifica Police Department and South San Francisco Police Department as well as the Reno Police Department and Washoe County Sheriff's Office will be following up on leads and also canvassing several areas seeking information regarding the following crimes:
