Ichthyosaur Sculpture on Display on Nevada Discovery Museum

Posted: Updated:

The Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum got a new piece that's been showcased at Burning Man.

The life-sized ichthyosaur replica now hangs in the lobby of the museum.

It's made of plywood and was originally created as a marionette for the counterculture festival in the Black Rock Desert last August.

The piece was constructed by Jerry Snyder and a large crew of volunteers at the Generator in Sparks. The artist said he's delighted to have his work on display permanently at the museum. "In our fantasy world it would go to some sort of science museum or something and I really wanted it to be some place local, so I feel pretty fortunate that it worked out, and it really it fills this space so wonderfully," says lead artist Snyder.

The artist will take questions about the sculpture from 11:30am to noon at the museum on Saturday.

And in case you didn't know, the ichthyosaur is Nevada's state fossil.
