Fishing Limit Lowered for Truckee River

Posted: Updated:

Fishing is one of the best activities in northern Nevada this time of year, but those of you who love to fish, you need to know the Nevada Department of Wildlife is cutting back on how many of them you are allowed to catch in the Truckee River from five per day to three.

"When we opened the Verdi ponds, the limit on the ponds was three, but the limit on the river, maybe a hundred yards away, was five and so people were becoming confused," said Chris Healy, spokesman for NDOW. We all know government gets accused of making people's lives confusing, well, we are taking a step to make them less confusing."

Of course, this law change has something to do with money. Healy said it costs the Department of Wildlife about $1 per fish to grow them and stock them.

He said this three fish per person limit will not only allow the supply of fish to stretch out, but maybe even save them some money.

We asked if this new limit will affect local fisherman in a negative way.

"No, I don't think so. You know, it used to be a lot of people would fish and that's the way they sustained themselves, but we don't see that as much now."
