Man's Body Identified in Spanish Springs Death Investigation

We're learning new information about a bizarre case in Spanish Springs. The case involves a woman who's still missing and her husband, who's now dead.

The Washoe County Sheriff's Office confirmed the body belonged to Gerald Muhl. His wife, Colleen, was reported missing on Sunday after her family hadn't heard from her since February 17th, which investigators say was unusual.

"She's a creature of habit, all of the family said," said Lt. Tom Green with the Washoe County Sheriff's Office. "So, in fact, she would always have daily contact with her daughter on the telephone."

The Sheriff's Office says Gerald had told them his wife died of a heart attack in California, which they found to not be true.

"We verified with the Kern County Medical Examiner's Office, the sheriff's department and local agencies down there that, she in fact, was not deceased," Lt. Green said.

He says the two were last seen when they returned from that trip on the 17th. Then, early Monday morning, deputies responded to the 12000 block of Ocean View Drive, just after midnight, on a report of a suicidal man, later identified as Gerald Muhl.

After searching the neighborhood for Muhl, deputies were unable to find him, but they say a walker found his body later that morning in a field near his home. They say he had shot himself in the head. So, on Tuesday, deputies searched the area for more evidence.

"We're looking for evidence," Lt. Green said. "But, we're not ruling out that we could be doing a recovery mission as well."

Investigators are unsure if Colleen is still alive and say Gerald would've had some answers to that.

"There's a lot of questions we would've liked to ask Mr. Muhl," Lt. Green said. "Unfortunately, we can't do that now."

Deputies are asking anyone who may have spoken with or seen the couple, especially on February 17th, to contact the Washoe County Sheriff's Office at (775) 785-9276. You can also call Secret Witness at (775) 322-4900, or text your tip to 847-411.
