Sparks Police have arrested a driver for hit and run after a pedestrian was run over just before 1 a.m. on March 1st.

According to SPD, the accident occurred at the intersection of northbound Rock Boulevard and Tyler Way. Witnesses report that a 35 year old Reno resident had been lying in the street, when one vehicle stopped to check and make sure he was okay. Before the driver could check, another vehicle drove by, running over the man in the street.

Witnesses gave the license plate of the suspect vehicle and officers tracked it to a home near the accident, where the driver, identified as 19-year-old Sparks resident James Garoutte, admitted to running the man over. Police say he is cooperating with the investigation and did not appear to be under the influence at the time of the accident.

Police do say that the victim, later identified as Matthew Tittor, appears to have been drinking before he was hit. He was transported to the Renown Medical center where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Officers say the preliminary investigation determined the pedestrian was at fault, however, on March 8th, Sparks Police officers arrested and booked Garoutte into Washoe County Jail for leaving the scene of an accident. No other charges have been filed.
